about

The idea for this came about standing on a rooftop listening to music watching a really red sunset in Pondicherry, India. The place where we were staying was in the Muslim quarter where five times a day you would hear chanting/the call to prayer (the Ezan) being blasted out of tannoy speakers on the minarets from several points across that part of town. Which meant several layers of atonal singing totally out of sync with each other. I thought it was great.

This combined with a song getting louder and louder in my earphones and the sun slowly setting it all felt quite manic and it made we want to record something to capture that. And somehow it came out exactly as I’d hoped.

Loads of instruments on this one: Guitar, ukulele, balalaika, accordion, lapsteel, electric bass, bass synth. All played by me pretty badly but I wasn’t aiming for virtuoso performances.
